Survive, Then Thrive; My Family's Holocaust Story

Survive, Then Thrive is a deeply moving memoir by Clare Bursky about her family's journey from Poland to Russia, and then to the United States following the outbreak of World War II in Europe in the 1930’s. The story begins in Poland, where Clare's young parents meet and eventually marry, despite objections from her paternal grandparents. When Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, the family fled east to Russia, enduring bombings, hunger, and forced labor. Despite immense hardships, including imprisonment in a labor camp, they survived through resilience, resourcefulness, and mutual support.

Clare was born in Russia during the war, defying the odds as a premature baby. After the war, the family returned to Poland briefly before moving to a displaced persons camp in Germany. They rebuilt their lives, engaging in the black-market trade to secure food and resources. In the 1950s, the family emigrated to the United States, settling in Brooklyn, New York, with the help of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). Clare's parents worked tirelessly, eventually opening a kosher butcher shop despite initial struggles.

Clare also highlights her family's contribution to the establishment of Israel and their sponsorship of several relatives moving to the U.S. She shares her personal journey, from learning English as a child to earning degrees in education and becoming a teacher and literacy specialist. Clare's family overcame adversity, embracing opportunities in America while preserving their Jewish heritage.

Survive, Then Thrive is a harrowing memoir of survival against all odds, and a beautiful tribute to victims of the Holocaust. Clare honours her family's legacy, recounting their struggles, triumphs, and the enduring impact of the Holocaust on their lives. Through wit and wisdom, she shares a deeply personal yet universal story of hope and perseverance.
